Firefighters Battle Flames Along CA Highways; Arson Suspect Nabbed

Mar. 23—A man was arrested Tuesday as a suspect in setting several fires quickly knocked down by firefighters alongside one East Bay highway, while the cause of a separate fire along another highway was under investigation.

Follow-up reports found flames along an exterior road beside westbound Highway 4 lanes east of the Willow Pass Road off-ramp. California Highway Patrol officers who also responded reported seeing smoke blowing across along the roadway.

“These are the first significant fires of the season & an indicator of dangerous conditions,” said a fire department social-media account describing several small grass fires along the north side of Highway 4. “Please use caution in the area & in all outdoor activities.”

Initial estimates of size were around 1 to 2 acres, with no preliminary reports of threatened homes or injuries.

By Tuesday evening, fire officials said crews contained one fire to an acre, with a second held to 2 1/2 acres, adding that a suspect seen leaving the area shortly after the fires began was detained and arrested on suspicion of arson.

在国家环保总局rate and unrelated incident, Oakland Fire Department firefighters responded at 1:41 p.m. to a report of flames seen beside northbound Highway 13 at the Redwood Road exit, before locating a spot brush fire close to northbound highway lanes by Park Boulevard.

That fire was quickly extinguished with no reports of significant spread or injury, an Oakland Fire Department dispatcher said. There was no preliminary information on a cause, and no reports of injury or property damage.

The fires brought quick action amid early-spring warm weather that threatened to break records Tuesday and Wednesday.
