Firefighter Becomes Trapped in Chicago Elevator Rescue

A firefighter became temporarily trapped when trying to rescue a victim from a Chicago (IL) high-rise elevator Sunday night.

Firefighters responded to a call about a man trapped in an elevator stalled between the 21st and 22nd floors of the 49-story Park Monroe Condominium, according to aChicago Tribunereport (http://trib.in/z0gdBw).

A firefighter went up in another elevator in an adjoining shaft, exited through the ceiling hatch to get to the other elevator’s hatch to transfer the trapped man and bring him down, but once the transfer was made, the other elevator also stalled.

Firefighters considered breaking through a brick wall to access the victim and trapped firefighter using a rope system, but an engineer was able to restart the elevator and manually bring it down.

The malfunction was reportedly electrical in nature.
