Evacuation Orders Lifted in Napa Fire

Firefighters gained the upper hand Thursday on a huge fire burning in Napa and Lake counties, allowing many residents to return to their homes and some roads in the area, closed since Tuesday, to be reopened, reports The San Francisco Chronicle.

Crews trudged into rugged terrain west of Lake Berryessa for a third day, working to cut containment lines around the Butts Fire. As the day went on, reports from those lines were good, said Scott McLean, a battalion chief for the stateDepartment of Forestry and Fire Protection.

“We’re making great progress,” he said. “We don’t expect any more expansion of the fire at this point.”

As of 6:45 p.m., the fire was 45 percent contained, up 15 percent over the previous day due to the work of the nearly 1,800 firefighters battling the blaze.

A stretch of Butts Canyon Road, near where the blaze broke out Tuesday, was reopened along the southern edge of the fire, but the northern section of the road, closer to the Lake County line, remained closed.
