Art lovers are mourning the loss of another building at the Heidelberg Project in Detroit, now a pile of smoldering rubble after a fire destroyed it early today, reports The Detroit Free Press.
Heidelberg volunteer Jeff Chamberlin today stood in shock looking at scorched records still nailed to a burned piece of siding of what he called “The Record House,” but it is officially called the “House of Soul.” Fire was reported in the vacant building on Elba near Mt. Elliott at 4:39 a.m., according to the Detroit Fire Department. Firefighters on the scene deemed the blaze “suspicious,” Detroit Fire Capt. Charles Simms said.
希姆斯说fire crews from Engine 9 and Ladder 6 spent two hours at the Heidelberg Project, a two-block expanse of vacant lots and mostly abandoned homes decorated with everything from stuffed teddy bears to grocery carts. They were unable to save “The Record House.” But a home nearly touching it next door still stands with minor fire damage.
希姆斯说Detroit Fire Arson Unit officers will investigate.
“Normally it’s a low priority because it’s a vacant dwelling,” Simms said today. “The only reason (for an investigation) is because it’s part of Heidelberg.”
