Detroit police report they shot a man Wednesday afternoon after that man came at a firefighter with a knife, reports wxyz.com (http://bit.ly/1DPuWql)
The 61-year-old man has been hospitalized.
Police say a relative of the man contacted them when they could not reach him. Detroit police went to his home on Euclid Street for a welfare check. Officers say relatives told them the man had a previous history of mental illness and he was known to have weapons.
The man would not open the door of the upstairs apartment for police. Firefighters were called in to break down the the door of his home.
He was found on the second floor, after a search for the first floor.
Detroit police say they ordered the man to drop the knife, but he refused to comply and lunged at the firefighter with a knife. They say the two officers each fired one shot to protect the firefighter.
The man was hit once in the chest. He has been rushed to the hospital, where he is in critical condition.
Police are now investigating the incident.
