The situation at an apartment fire early Monday in Rutherford, New Jersey, was apparently exacerbated byresidents‘ attempts to remove a burning piece of furniture from the building.

Fueled by the outside air, the flames extended to the frontporchof the structure, blocking residents’escapepath.

Firefighters used ladders to rescue second-floor residents. At least three people were transported to an area hospital forsmoke inhalation.

The early morning fire at thegarden-style apartmentswas reportedly because of a defective or overheated power cord.
