In April, the Watertown (NY) city manager informed the fire department that firefighters would no longer be able to conductfire inspectionsof the city’s commercial buildings, and now the city council has supported that decision.
Last week, officials repealed the remaining sections of the city code pertaining to fireinspectionsbecause they have been “effectively replaced, superseded and/or pre-empted by the city code enforcement office and state building codes,” according to a report from theWatertown Daily Times(http://bit.ly/139DROu).
The unanimous vote Tuesday night was strongly opposed by the head of the local firefighters union. Timothy P. “Tucker” Wiley, president of Watertown Professional Fire Fighters Association Local 191, says theinspectionsare necessary to keep firefighters safe on the fireground.
Building inspection data is critical to firefighters responding to fires at these buildings, helping familiarize members with the layouts and any potential hazards should there be a fire at these locations.
