Wooster Street Fire in New York
Seven firemen were overcome by smoke and damage esomated at $250,000 was caused by a fire in New York, October 30, at 6.30 P. M„ which destroyed the six-story loft building at Nos. 70 and 72 Wooster Street. When discovered the fire was burning fiercely on the ground floor. The Union Corrugated Case Company occupied this floor, and the remaining five floors, except the top, which was occupied by the Wakefield Hat Company, were empty. Engine Company No. 13, the first to arrive, barely had time to get to work, when the flames were shooting out of the top of the structure and had already spread to the adjoining building. Acting Chief Joseph Martin on his arrival sent in three more alarms which called 19 high service and fire truck companies into service. In an effort to run a line of hose close to the rear of the building. Lieutenant Brown and six firemen of Engine 15 were overcome by smoke, and were rescued by the men of Engine No. 55.
