WOODEN BEAMS vs. IRON GIRDERS

WOODEN BEAMS vs. IRON GIRDERS

That a solid oaken beam or other beam will withstand the action even of a fierce fire when an iron girder will collapse is a fact well known to all who have studied the subject of slow-burning materials.

The accompanying cut (reproduced from the London Fireman) witnesses to the above truth. It shows the iron girder intercepted in its fall by a wooden beam, over which it hangs warped and useless, while the beam itself, although weakened in the centre by the action of the flames, still retains its hold upon the brickwork of the piers.
