WILLIAM BALLOU DONNELL DEAD.

WILLIAM BALLOU DONNELL DEAD.

切断在壮年,威廉率多恩ll, president and owner of the S. F. Hayward company, passed away at his country home, Northport (L. I.), N. Y., on Tuesday, July 4. On Friday, June 30, he attended his business as usual and seemed to be in excellent health and bouyant spirits. That evening he left for his country home to spend a short vacation oyer the Fourth of July. On Saturday he complained of abdominal pains, which refused to yield to the usual remedies. The local physician then summoned an eminent surgeon from New York, and after a consultation his case was pronounced a slight attack of appendicitis, so slight that no operation was then necessary. The attack becoming worse, the New York doctor was again summoned and an operation was decided upon. It was stated that the immediate cause of Mr. Donnell’s death was not due to the operation, but to his inability to regain consciousness from the administration of ether. The deceased was engaged in the fire department supply business about nine years ago, after the retirement of S. F. Hayward from the firm of which he was head. In partnership with Spear he continued the business of S. F. Hayward & Co., at 367 Canal street. From the time he entered the business it became a success and gradually increased under his direction until he left it one of the most prosperous fire department supply houses in the country. Mr. Donnell was a hard worker, and his methods were so thoroughly applied that his work generally resulted in what he started to perform. He understood the fire supply business so well that he had seldom to call in others to assist him in his plans. When the American Fire Engine company (now the American-LaFrance Fire Engine Co.) was organised Mr. Donnell was appointed local sales agent in New York and in this capacity he worked successfully until the recent reorganisation of the company, when he resumed his old place, having purchased a full interest in the S. F. Hayward company, becoming its president. treasurer and practical proprietor. He was the son-in-law of George H. Robinson, vicepresident of the Gorham Manufacturing company, of this city, and former president of the Fire Extinguisher Manufacturing company, of Chicago. He was the son of the late William Donnell, who for many years was connected with the editorial staff of the New York Tribune and more recently was it> financial editor. His two brothers are G. T. Donnell, lawyer, and H. E. Donnell, architect. He graduated in the class of 93, from Columbia University, and was a member of the Columbia and other clubs. He married Laura Robinson, youngest daughter of G. H. Robinson, by whom he leaves four children. He resided at 52 High street, Orange, N. J., and had a beautiful country home at Eatons Neck. L. I. Mr Donnell was highly respected by his business associates and all those who came in contact with him on account of his straightforwardness, integrity and sincerity of purpose. By bringing these principles into all his engagements he succeeded in establishing the present business. The men in his employ feel that in his death they have lost a very liberal employer and a very true friend. His remains were taken to Fresh Pond crematory on Thursday afternoon, the anniversary of his birthday, where they were incinerated in the presence, of a great number of his relatives and friends. It is seldom FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERING has to record so sad a calling away as that of William B. Donnell. At the early age of thirty-three years, when he was about to pass the threshold of the prime of life, with the brighest prospects before him, this faithful husband, brother and friend had to obey the last dread summons to the great sorrow of those left behind. The editor of this journal, with great regreat, wishes to record his sincere condolence to the bereaved family.

THE LATE W. B. DONNELL.
