Mr. T. Pridham, in a recent number of the Commonwealth-Engineer of Australia, shows a method of providing a joint in special castings for hydrants, valves and other connections that are inserted in wood stave pipe. The method consists in placing a run or ship lead joint between the wood and the iron.
The water department of Springfield, Mass., has installed a plant at the filter bed for the manufacture of sulphate of aluminum since last July. The plant produces on the average about 1,000 pounds of alum a day and consists of two large iron caldrons suspended about the end of two wooden crystallizing boxes.
