Water Supply and Fire Protection

Water Supply and Fire Protection

One of the many points of contact between the water department and the fire department is that of water supply for fire protection. The two functions of the water department are to furnish water to the citizens for potable, domestic and industrial purposes and to supply it in sufficient quantities when necessity requires, for the extinguishment of fires. In the former case the fluid must he of the purest quality, and if in its raw state it is polluted or turbid it must be thoroughly cleansed by filtration and purified by chlorination before it is allowed to enter the mains for consumption.

On the other hand, the supply for fire protection must be of ample quantity and unless the fire department is supplied with pumpers it must be delivered under fairly high pressure. Its purity is not so important a consideration in this instance. Naturally in most departments, however, unless large ones, the supply must he used for both domestic consumption and fire protection and consequently must fulfill the requirements of both ; that is, it must be delivered in ample quantities with good pressure and must also he of the purest quality.
