WATER SUPPLY
Plans have been prepared in Minneapolis, Minn., to increase the present water power of the Falls of St. Anthony to the extent of 12,000 horsepower, or almost one-fourth of that at present. This improvement will be of great benefit to the city as a manufacturing point; it will have the greatest utilized water power in the country, the five next in size not being equal in capacity to that at this point; additional flouring mill and other manufactories will be established; and in carrying out the improvement hundreds of men will be employed.
One of the greatest undertakings in water works construction in Maine is that part of the Bath water works extension that must cross the Kennebec River to give the city a water supply from Nequasset Lake, in Woolwich. From the Bath shore to the Woolwich side is nearly 3,000 feet and the depth of water from 40 to 50 feet at low tide. The sixteen-inch pipe, e ich section 12 feet long, is put together on a scow and lowered to the bottom of the river by means of a long slide, inclined at an angle of 25 degrees. Three serious accidents have occasioned the managers much trouble, but the work will be carried through in spite of difficulties. The different pieces of pipe are connected by movable elbow joints, making the whole an immense flexible tube.
