Water Improvement Program at Akron
The mayor of Akron, O., recently stated that the following three-year program is to be followed in the water works improvements: Enlargement of the purification plant. Installment of mechanical stokers and coal handling equipment for the pumping station. Reinforcement of the main which carries the water from Kent to the city of Akron. Acquirement of land for the future enlarging of the distributing reservoir. This is for the protection of the city against unusual draughts on account of fire or possible breaks in the force main, as well as to help equalize the pressure over the entire city. Addition of pipe to the distribution system. This will involve piping of large size to be used solely for the purpose of feeding large areas, and second piping of smaller size to serve the many sections of the city that have not now any water. Improvements to include pumping stations and elevated tanks in the west, south and each districts that cannot now be served in adequate manner by the present distributing reservoir. When installed, these will give both a sufficient supply as well as a proper pressure at all times. Meters to be installed on all services, thereby helping the city to check up its leakage and control the actual amount of water consumed. Here is a statement of what will be done with the million dollars to be raised in June: Enlargcment of purification plant by adding 10,000,000 gallons daily filtering capacity to cost approximately $300,000. Construction of a 30-inch main in Buchtel avenue, from E. Market street to High street to improve service in all parts of the city west of the university. This will cost about $91,000. General extension of small mains leaving until later the reinforcement of the system designed purely to improve service. The approximate cost will be $500,000. The establishment of satisfactory service on West Hill estimated at $42,000. Meters, $50,000. Hydrants, $21,000. Total. $904,000. Engineering and contingencies, 10 per cent., $90,000. Total, $994,000.
