WATER AND WATER WORKS.

WATER AND WATER WORKS.

Continued from last week.

The third type of water works is the combined stand pipe and direct service system. In this the pumping machinery is usually in duplicate, and each half is capable of furnishing from one half to twice the daily consumption, while the standpipe or elevated tank is usually proportioned to hold about one day's consumption of water. The standpipe works costs much less than a combined pumping and reservoir works, and can be constructed on a plain or prairie, as at Chicago, Providence, Detroit and Toledo.
