Toronto Water Extension Progressing.

Toronto is about to commence the operation of its electrically driven pumping plant and otherwise bring the water system, both for potable uses and fire protection, up to a high standard of efficiency. As soon as the city installs and puts in operation its own power plant the pumps will be electrically driven, and there will then be 18 of them, according to Mr. C. L. Fellows, the waterworks engineer.

It was in 1872 that Toronto first bought its waterworks plant, then a crude affair, owned bv a Montreal man named Furness. It was managed for him by the well-known “Ned” Foley. The plant was bought for $200,000. It was made up mainly of a number of mains and several reservoirs. For some years the w-orks were under the control of a commission, but finally the city council took them over, and has administered them since.
