TOPICS OF THE DAY.

FOR more than four weeks the residents of West Twenty-fifth street have been deprived of Croton water on the second and, of course—according to an immemorial custom at which we repine, but say nothing -on the third floors. On Sundays and at night the water runs a feeble stream ; but on week days, between 8 A. M. and 6 P. M., saving for a little while at noon, not a drop can be obtained. If we had a supply of salt water for ordinary purposes, there would be no complaint of a short supply of Croton for domestic purposes. The absurdity of a great city like New York being dependent upon a single system ot water supply partakes of a suicidal nature.

A CORRESPONDENT writing from Ansonia, Conn., is desirous of having some one from each of the numerous cities and towns in that neighborhood write regularly for THE JOURNAL giving the fire news, and thus keeping their neighbors posted as to what is going on. This is a good idea, and we hope it will be acted on promptly. We have a standing invitation to all persons interested in the Fire Service to send us communications. We promise to give all an opportunity to be heard, although the crowded state of our columns may sometimes cause a little delay in the publication of letters. Send on your news and we will make room for it.
