TOPICS OF THE DAY.

THE Tournament which is to be held this year at South Bend, Ind., under the auspices of the Firemen’s Association of that State, will, undoubtedly, be a successful affair in every respect, and a great event for South Bend. The Firemen of that city are famed for their hospitality, as well as for their energy. The Tournament deserves to be largely attended, and the South Bend Firemen should have the co-operation of all their brethren in the State.

THE new Water Tower built by Mr. Greenleaf, of Baltimore, for the Boston Fire Department, was tested last week with the most satisfactory results. As the machine left the shops but a few days before, and had never been tested, the fact that it worked satisfactorily on the first trial is evidence th^t the builder is a first-class mechanic. This new apparatus is destined to play an important part in the work of fire extinguishment in the future. The trial of the Water Tower gave such satisfaction that it has been accepted by the Board of Fire Commissioners, and the bill of the maker ordered to be paid.
