ELECTRICITY generated by water power is to be the operating factor employed in the Kashmir railway which is to be constructed over 186 miles of the most mountainous part of India. The use of electricity admits of a much lighter motor for drawing the same load and also of grades which no steam locomotive engine could climb without having recourse to the rack system.
FOGS and calms have been the great October feature on the coasts of this country, while * unusual drought has marked the interior districts. One of the results of that drought has been the fierce forest fires which have raged in Pennsylvania. New York, and adjoining States, the estimated losses from which run up into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. So far as concerns Pennsylvania, the laws of that State have materially checked the ravages of such fires in recent years; but carelessness and malicious mischief, added to the condition ofj the woods themselves, have been the cause of destructive conflagrations.
