TOLEDO FIRE DEPARTMENT.

TOLEDO FIRE DEPARTMENT.

(Specially Written for FIRE AND WATER.)

Toledo, Ohio, is situated on the Maumee river, twelve miles from lake Erie, and is credited with having one of the finest, if not the finest harbor on the chain of the great lakes. This natural advantage, together with her numerous railroads and the enterprise of her citizens, has made Toledo a large manufacturing and distributing centre. In 1832 a tract of land was purchased adjoining Port Lawience, which was platted and called Vistula. At a later period Port Lawrence and Vistula were united under the name of Toledo. The place increased in population steadily, and in 1837 numbered 800 inhabitants, at which time (Jan. 7, 1837) it was incorporated.
