Here is established a magistrate’s court, and here, also, is a branch of the Brazilian Custom house—the latter, at least, a necessity, as, owing to the fact that rubber smuggling is constantly being carried on between Peru and Brazil — the export duties being higher in the latter republic, a great deal of the product is secretly sent across the river and shipped as the product of Peru. The accompanying view of the town (reproduced through the courtesy of the management of the India Rubber World) shows a portion of the street, which is about one mile in length, with the rubber warehouses of Messrs. Marins & Levy, collectors and exporters, and that of the Comptoir Colonial Francais, which gathers and ships rubber direct to Europe. On the Peruvian side of the river, as well as on the other, many new caucho trees have been planted, w’hich are now almost ready for tapping. The steamers of the Amazon Steam Navigation company and other lines make Remate de Males their final stopping place on the Javary river.
