The Washington Department.
At a meeting of the District of Columbia Board of Fire Commissioners, held January 2, Lieut. Wawrinsky, of the Swedish army, who is studying the American Fire Departments, was present. Chief Engineer Cronin presented his report for the month of December, showing that there were fifteen alarms during the month for fire, involving an estimated loss of $3,700. on which there was an insurance of $3,300. On the first instant, five of the men doing temporary duty in the I)epartment were dropped from the rolls, their , services being no longer required. Superintendent Miles, of the fire alarm telegraph, in his report for the month of December, states that the wires and instruments are all in good condition, and that the telegraph had done good service throughout the past year, during j which time 164 alarms were transmitted over j the wires without a single failure. A recess j was taken for the examination of certain samples of hose for the use of the Department. The Board went into executive session to consider the bids, and, as a result of their delibcrations, will recommend to the District Commissioners the adoption of the “ Acme” hose (2-ply) offered by Walton Bros., at $1.10 per lineal foot. This is the same kind of hose which has been in use in the dristrict for the past two years, and given satisfaction to the executive officers of the Department.
