The lightmg calls for 30,000 incandescent lamps, attached to 13,000 fixtures, and the thirty-nine electric ele vators will travel altogether 10.608 lin. ft. from floor to floor—if all traveled at once, the round trip would be one of over four miles in extent. Besides these elevators, there will be stairways in both buildings, which, like the elevator shafts, will be entirely boxed in with iron and glass to insure the greatest possible protection against fire. As a matter of fact, a fire could hardly break out, much less gain any headway, since the building is not only to be constructed of fireproof material, but will also have a very complete firefighting system installed. Standpipes will open on every floor, and night and day the corridors will be patrolcd by men, whose business it will be to look out for the slightest sign of fire. All the railway cars will be of steel and fireproof, and will, besides, be equipped with fire-extinguishing appliances.
