NO MORE IROQUOIS DAMAGE SUITS
The winding up in bankruptcy proceedings in a distant State of the corporation that owned the ill-fated Iroquois theatre of Chicago ends the last hope of claimants of ever obtaining damages for the loss of relatives in that distressing affair. The corporation was formed in New Jersey, and was patterned after the thousands of others intended to avoid personal responsibility. When the Iroquois survivors sought to hold the company liable for the wanton destruction ot life the corporation faced a possible judgment reaching into the millions. as already more than 270 suits had been entered. Under the law $10,000 might he recovered on a life, and while but a little more than otie-half of those having claims started suits, it is certain that if there was any prospect of securing satisfaction in case judgment was obtained there would have been claimants, running into 500 or more, against the Iroquois incorporators. Thus the sad epoch closes and no one is responsible for the ruthless destruction of life that makes the Iroquois calamity one of the most sorrowful in the world’s history. It was an institution conceived in cupidity and its brief history was floated in the channel of corruption so vast and unspeakable that its record will long he without a parallel.
