The Importance of Prompt Notification When Shutting Off Water.

Some time ago in a small western town the water supply was shut off for several hours on account of repair work. One small factory was not informed of this. The man sent around to notify the water takers either passed this factory by or gave the notice to some irresponsible person, who failed to deliver it. In an isolated part of the factory u’as an ice machine in operation. Through the pump and the condenser ran cold water to cool the ammonia. Now this water was very necessary in operating this machine, as without it the pump would become hot, expand and burst. And there would be small possibility of a person getting out of the room alive with the condensed ammonia thus liberated. But this ice machine did net blow up, for the very simple reason that one of the men became thirsty, and of course discovered that there was no water. Thus a serious accident was averted. This goes to show’ that in some factories, and especially in chemical works, the stopping of w’ater without notifying the proper persons might cause serious fires and loss of life.
