说到这里,《阿提卡新闻报》倒在磨坊上,把他的料斗撞飞了,把传动装置弄坏了,他只好关上磨坊门; the pole-ers shouted, the leaders swung to right and left, the lines became slackened and got entangled with their feet and knocked the Old Harry out of the Foreman; but when the Truck struck the ground again at the old Maynard place, evenline was straight and in place. Arrived at the fire, they ran a ladder up in an apple tree on the opposite side of the street, threw their hooks on the wood-shed and hauled the cellar out into the garden ; next they hooked on an eight-inch square beech post, gave one yank and broke the post in two ; but the momentum was so great that the rear end of the pole was driven through an eighteen-inch green elm tree that stood there, so that the end projected about two feet beyond the tree. Johnny N— was found hanging on the end of the pole, but whether he dodged around the tree and grabbed the pole as it came through, or whether he went through the tree with the pole, he says he is unable to tell, as he was in such a hurry. The four fat men of the Company failed to respond ; three of them are supposed to have been unable to turn about in their bed-rooms, and in their excitement forgot to back out. The other, who lives a mile or more away, is capable of running sixteen miles in twentyeight hours any day, and is supposed to have been unable to make the turn into Exchange street, and so got lost on Bennington hill. Billy failed to connect ; and when the rest went to find him for an explanation, they found he had got the larboard sleeve of his fire-shirt on the starboard leg, the starboard sleeve on the larboard leg, the right boot on the left foot, the left boot on the foot of the bed-post, and had used up a whole box of matches in trying to light a chair-post for a lamp ; a committee took him in hand and untangled him in two hours. Frank E— has not found out about the fire yet, because he had just gone to bed as they rang the bell.
