Texas Volunteers to Meet in Brownwood
The forty-sixth annual convention of the Texas State Volunteer Firemen’s Association is to meet in Brownwood, Tex., in combination with the Fire Chiefs’ and Fire Marshals’ Association, on May 9 to 11. It is anticipated that this year’s convention will be the largest ever held by the associations, and the men of Brownwood are making great preparations for entertaining the large number expected. The department consists of 51 members, 31 of whom are active, eight on the city pay roll, and 12 life or honorary members. An illustration of the apparatus and personnel of the department is given on the next page. Some notable members in the picture are Ex-Chief and “Father" Weakley, who organized the first volunteer department of the city in 1883, and served as chief until 1904; "Mother” Weakley, his wife, elected mother of the department; Chief W. D. McCulley, who joined the department in 1900 and has served as chief since 1910; also president of the volunteer association in 1920; W. D. Armstrong, president of department; D. J. Johnson, first vicepresident; T. W. Tomrae, third vice-president; W. P. Denny, secretary. J. H. Robertson, first assistant chief; West Richardson, second assistant chief; Olaf Gill, captain, Rev. R. R. Rives, chaplain, and Alvin Gelbhar. fire marshal. The apparatus of Brownwood consists of: Station No. 1, one Amcrican-LaFrance 1,000-gal. pumper, one Denby combination car and one Cadillac service truck. Station No. 2, one combination Brockway car. Sis men sleep in No. 1 and four in No. 2.
