Captain Fancher received honorable mention on October 11. 1889. from the commissioners for rescuing a child, at the risk of his life, from a burning building at Court and Artizan Streets. His splendid record as captain, his apparent expert knowledge of fire fighting and his evident Dualities for the leadership of men, resulted in his appointment on February 1st, 1897, to the post of assistant chief. On September 4th of thesame year he was appointed fire marshal and one year later. September 1, 1898, he was promoted to the position of superintendent of the fire department. Only his title has changed since.
