Tenement Law Violations in Jersey City
Thirteen cases against owners of tenementhouses in Jersey City were on the calendar for trial before Judge Carrick in the First District Court last week. The complaint in each case was made by the State Tenement-house Commission. All the cases, which have been pending for several months, grew out of the failure of the defendants to comply with the law requiring the placing of fire escapes on tenement-houses. In three cases the owners settled with the representative of the attorneygeneral, by payment of $25 penalty and costs and by promising to have fire escapes placed on their buiidings at once. In each instance the owners were warned that unless the fire escapes were erected without further delay new complaints will be brought against them and the full penalty of $100 imposed. It was said by the representative of the Tenementhouse Commission that since its organization it has caused fire escapes to be placed on 2,400 tenement-houses in the State, including 834 in Newark, and that in addition to these it has on file contracts for the placing of escapes on 457 other tenements in the State. In different courts in the State it has pending a number of cases for violation of this part of the law.
