STATEN ISLAND” WATER.
President George Cromwell and the members of the Richmond, New York, borough board have been investigating the possibilities of obtaining a water supply for the borough at points remote from the island. The borough is using about 3,000,000 gallons a day, and that, experts say, is about the limit ot the island’s sources of supply. It is said that the board will find but two ways out of the difficulty. A pipe line under water is the main characteristic of either solution. Water must be brought trom New Jersey by a pipe line under the Kill von Kull or Staten Island sound or else from the State of New York by means of a similar pipe under the Narrows or from Bay Ridge to Stapleton. As Brooklyn has no water to spare, it will be proposed that the main supply pipe be connected with Manhattan s supply, possibly by means of the ManhattanBrooklyn tunnel. President Cromwell says that all solutions possible will be very costly in execution, put that conditions are becoming such that it is imperative to act. even if all other public improvements have to be set back to enable the borough to be properly supplied with water.
