The total amount of underground water is considerable, and the annual increment is without question a substantial quantity. The supply is practically all derived from the rain and snow that falls within the basin, and this basin is relatively small, but the porous subsoil of the flat affords good intake conditions and allows much of the precipitation to find its way underground. The supply could, of course, be exhausted by heavy pumping, but with conservative development there is no serious danger of exhaustion. The material underlying the flat consists of irregular alternating beds of poorly assorted, clayey, sandy and gravely sediments". The gravely beds are the best water producers, but even these include much intermixed clay and silt which prevent the water from entering the wells freely.
