Shotgun Fire-Alarms.
For more years than the proverbial oldest inhabitant of Murray, Ky., can call to mind the fire-alarm system in that town has been to shoot off guns, when the necessity arose. Today, however, because of the night-riders being addicted to disturbing the peace of the citizens—chiefly in the hours of darkness—people have been misled by the practice indulged in by these ruffians in firing off their guns and revolvers, and have not turned out to fires that have broken out round about them, but have remained at home. For that reason the mayor has issued a proclamation, by which he has changed the fire-alarm system from the old fashion to that of ringing bells and blowing whistles. One of these days possibly it may flash upon the community to inaugurate an organised system of fire protection with an up-to-date fire-alarm telegraph.
