SELECTIONS FROM THIS YEAR’S FIRE REPORTS

Chief Benoit, of the Montreal, Que., fire brigade, report_____ that during 1899 there were held 676 investigations into the causes of fires. The number of these investigations has increased considerably since 1895, when there were only 315—less than one-half of the number held in 1899. Of the fires 293 were in private houses and residences and sixteen in restaurants and hotels. In quite a number of cases they were caused by the explosion of coal oil lamps, poor stoves, and defective electric wires.

The sixth annual report of the Cincinnati salvage corps’ superintendent, J. J. Conway, is an interesting document. The corps now has two large and two small wagons in first-class shape; 100 new covers have been added—making 424 covers in stock. Captain Conway's remarks concerning the biggest fire in the past year are well worth perusal and are as follows:
