After six major pier fires in the last 3 ½ years, the Seattle Fire Department under Chief Gordon F. Vickery has arrived at some definite conclusions about fire protection equipment on waterfront facilities.
In each of the six fires, the permanently installed fire protection equipment on the underside of the piers performed either partially or wholly unsatisfactorily in controlling the fires, and this includes the latest—a 14-hour struggle last Thanksgiving Day which eventually saw 28 fire fighters injured, 11 men hospitalized and one 12-year veteran electrocuted.
