THE annual report of the Commissioners of the District of Columbia has just been submitted to the president. Speaking of the fire department the report says:

“In a carefully prepared statement made by the assessor of the District of Columbia, April 28, 1894, the value of all improvements in the District of Columbia exclusive of the land was $180,066,421, of which the United States owns $99,352,500, and private owners $78,587,511, the District owning the balance of $2,126,500.
