Praise for the Rochester Fire Department.

George A. Gilman, who has retired from the position of commissioner of public safety at Rochester, N. Y., has written a farewell letter to Chief Little and the members of that city’s fire department, in which he thanks them for their loyal support during his term of office. “I am sure (he adds) that the department, as a whole, is conscious that the tools placed in their hands are more effective than those in use at the beginning of my term of office. Thanks to Mayor Cutler and the board of estimate and apportionment, our recommendations have had consideration and financial support. Many changes have occurred during my six years as commissioner. Mention of some of these may he of interest. Promotion appointments have been made as follows: One chief; one assistant chief; one battalion chief; eleven captains; twenty-one lieutenants; eleven engineers; five tillermen. New appointments embrace one supervising engineer and 134 drivers and firemen. During this time the fire headquarters building was constructed on Central avenue, and new quarters were built for the additional companies 15 and 16, and truck 6. New apparatus has been purchased as follows: Six engines ; five combination wagons; two water towers; one quick raising truck; manual fire-alarm telegraph system; three engines have been rebuilt; repair shop has been established, horseshoeing wagon built; and department shoeing established; hose 1, chemical 2 and hose 13 were made full engine and hose companies; the leaky hose prevalent in the department has been entirely replaced by a serviceable article. Firemen have been assigned to theatres as provided by ordinance.”
