Pittsfield Annual Fire Report
There were 195 alarms in Pittsfield, Masslast year, according to the annual report of Chief W. C. Shepard, of which 144 were telephone. 38 box, 13 verbal, and 3 false, an increase of 35 over the preceeding years. The total loss was $88,859.98 in property valued at $597,395, and insured for $494,560. Insurance paid $88,709.98. There was no loss on buildings that were not insured, and only $150 loss of uninsured contents. The department consists of 20 permanent, 19 call and 48 volunteer members, operating four steam fire engines, one aerial and two service trucks, two motor hose-chemical wagons, and onehorse hose-chemical wagon. The department laid 27,100 feet of hose, used 73 chemical extinguishes and 37 chemical engine tanks, and 152 chemical extinguishers outside of the department were also used. Eight rubber covers were used to protect goods. The principal causes for fire were chimneys, 29; grass fires. 16, and children and matches, ten. The recommendations arc a motor hose-chemical wagon, and one piece of motor apparatus each year until all horse-drawn apparatus is eliminated, six more permanent men. and two additional lieutenants.
