Old Hotel Destroyed at Tyron

Captain Charles T. Cobb, of the Tryon, N. C., department was obliged to use a bucket brigade in fighting a fire which destroyed the old Mimosa Hotel recently. Sixteen firemen with one Seagrave hand-drawn chemical engine, one hose reel and one ladder truck responded to the alarm. The destroyed building was three stories high, and was built of wood. The fire was caused by live coals, it is thought, and originated in the boiler room at about 11 A. M. Owing to the distance of the hotel from department headquarters and the rapidity with which the fire spread, the flames were beyond control when the firemen arrived. Captain Cobb quickly realized this fact and devoted his energies to saving the cottages and other bui'dings nearby. The men under Captain Cobb’s direction did splendid work, checking the spread of the fire. The department also succeeded in saving much of the building’s contents by quick work. None of the occupants of the building were injured. The hotel building was valued at $40,000 and the loss was total.
