Ohio Proposes to Regulate Gas Appliances
Efforts of the Ohio department of health to curb the increasing number of tragedies and near tragedies from carbon monoxide poisoning have resulted in the introduction of a bill in the General Assembly to regulate the manufacture, sale and use of gas heaters of all kinds that, in addition to the end desired, is expected to have an important bearing on fire control. If the bill is enacted into law, the use of the rubber hose and lead connections for gas supply to stoves and heaters will be forbidden in the state. Several Ohio cities have ordinances forbidding the use of rubber hose gas connections, but there is no state law bearing on the subject, and there is nothing to prevent the use of lead connections in either state law or the ordinances of any city. Lead connections, which after being bent several times crystallize and break, are regarded as no less dangerous than hose connections.
From November 1, last, to Saturday, February 24, there were reported to the Ohio department of health 34 deaths caused by flueless gas room heaters and 11 caused by other forms of carbon monoxide generation, some of which may have been due to the flueless room heater and a few of which were due to automobile exhaust fumes in closed privated garages.
