Recommends Changes in City Pension Law
In his annual report to the city council Fire Chief E. J. Shadwick of Saratoga, N. Y., speaks as follows of the city’s pension law: “The present pension law should be amended if any changes are to be made in the city charter or a home rule bill is passed by the legislature, as our pension law is a joke compared to other places in the state or any volunteer departments, as a fireman would not leave anything to his family or dependents if he should be killed or die from injuries received in the service, simply $250.”
Chief Shadwick reports a fire loss for the year of $30,036.81 in the inside district and in the outside $16,560. In speaking of the alarms for the year Chief Shadwick says: “How greatly the extension of the city limits and use of motor apparatus has contributed to the radius within which the department can work, and how widely this fire protection is extended is shown by the report which shows fifty-three of these calls were in the outside district of the city, one in the town of Milton, eight in the town of Greenfield, three in the town of Wilton, one in the town of Malta, one in the town of Saratoga, one in the town of Providence, and one emergency case in the town of Saratoga. The calls answered outside the city were in emergencies requiring outside help.
