NEW YORK CITY.
THE NEW YORK DEPARTMENT.
No more active company can be found in the Department than Engine Co. No. 29. The recent Barclay street fire showed that they were not wanting in the discharge of their duties— they were the first company on the ground— and had the first stream upon the burning building—besides, they rendered most heroic service in the rescuing of lives—one of the members alone succeeding in getting out four of the boys and one girl. The quarters of the Company, as we stated in our last issue, are adjoining H. and L. 10—but are anything but what they should be. Still they manage to get along very well, and live in the hope that in some future day the Commissioners will take pity upon them and provide them with a new house. At the head of the company stands one of the old veteran Firemen of New York City, George McLaughlin, who served in the Volunteer Department with Engine Co. No. 31. At the organization of the paid Department he was made Foreman of Engine Co. No. 23, and had charge of Engines 32, 15,6,4, 31, 7, and H. and L. 8. He was removed frqm the force illegally,! and after two years litigation in the courts, he was reinstated again, and sent to Engine Co.! No. 1, then to No. 13, and finally to No. 29, where he has been in command ever since. His assistant is Henry Murry of old Hose Co. No. 5. whose record as a Fireman has won for him the admiration of the entire Board of Fire Commissioners. He was connected as a private with Engines No. 12, and 32. and was but recently promoted to be an Assistant Foreman and detailed to Engine 29. The men are most atl old Firemen, and have done heavy duty at the Barclay street fire. They consist of Patrick Walsh, ol old Hose 15 and Engine 31. Luke Cavanagh of Engine 21, James Masterson of Engine 15, Andrew Gilmartin Engine 21, Chas. Margison of Hoses of Auburn. N. Y., John McCarty, of Hose 6. E. J. Owens, Hose 5, J. J. McNamara. Engineb, Frank Kelly and Patrick Martin.
