NEW YORK AND ITS WATER SUPPLY.
AT last week’s meeting of the board of estimate of New York the subject of the city’s water supply was taken up,and the same old corn was threshed out over and over again, except that possibly another step furward was taken towards the municipal ownership of whatever additions may be made in future in the way of adding to the sources of water supply. A report of Engineer Me Lean,of the department of finance, was read, in which he approved of issuing corporate stock for $1,800,000 for the water supply in Brooklyn. The various parts of the appropriation were: For two reservoirs at Massepequa and East Meadow creek, $1,200,000; acquiring of lands, $300,000; improvements, $200,000; amt storage and coal sheds, $100,000. Engineer Birdsail explained that the entire cost of the improvements and building of reservoirs in Brooklyn would be about $3,000,000; the $1,200,000 being for the completion of two reservoirs for this year. An application for the necessities of water in Manhattan and the Bronx was brought up, and $500,000 of this amount, which was for the Croton watershed, was first passed. The remainder, $1,750,000, was approved later. This action is regarded by many as a decided step towards the city assuring its own future as to water supply. It appears that the appropriation is for work to be done this year. The present plan of the city officials is to appropriate each year from $5,000,000 to $10,000,000 for building additions to the water system, so that In a few years there will be no fear of a water famine during a severe drought. All this work is to be done independently of the extensions now being made by the aqueduct commissioners.
