New Orleans Receives Fire Alarm by Telegram
A New Orleans Fire Department alarm operator was startled early on the morning of April 25 when he received a telegram reporting a fire in a local apartment hotel. At 4:58 a.m. the bewildered operator received the message and department response confirmed the communication as genuine.
The blaze, involving a sofa bed, had been extinguished by hotel employees with minor damage. During business hours later in the day Western Union delivered a copy of the telegram which had been phoned to the fire department.
