The mayor gave the visiting delegates a cordial welcome and hoped their stay would give them a good impression of Elizabeth. A street parade was made, the buildings along the line of march being decorated with flags and hunting. Among those who participated in the procession were Thomas H. O’Neill, of Jersey City, who organized the association and who was made the first president, and Michael J. Ryan, of Paterson, the second president of the organization. Newark had the largest representation at the convention, sending about 100 men, among whom was former Chief Robert Kiersted. In the evening there was a fitting end to the successful convention A banquet was served in St. Michael’s hall and, including the guests, there were about 700 present. Ex-President William H. Aiken was toastmaster. Chief Astley, of Newark, urged that politics be excluded from the association and his views were approved by all the chiefs who spoke after him. There was a warm contest for the next meeting place. It was not decided, but it is thought that Newark will be selected.
