New Haven Chief Tests Smoke Masks
By the direction of Fire Chief Rufus R. Fancher, of New Haven, Conn., and under the supervision of Frank Blotchley, superintendent of motor apparatus, a test was recently conducted to demonstrate the merits of smoke masks. Mr. Blotchley carried out these tests in a room in which were liberated ammonia fumes, sulphur, and other material forming gases so deadly that no human being could have survived their effect. Firemen wearing LaFrance masks entered the room and remainded for long periods. Chief Fancher was so pleased with the results of this test that he has ordered twelve masks added to his equipment.
The Boston department has purchased 14 of the Ross hydrant thawing machines from the American-La France Fire Engine Co.
