New Fire Station for Passaic.
第三街轮胎的房子,正在建造中near Essex street. Passaic, N. J., just opposite the Reid Memorial Library will be, when completed, one of the finest structures of its kind in this state. The building which will cost $32,000 is 40 x 85 feet. The front elevation of the building will give a unique effect with its terra cotta, limestone and brick trimmings. Large Grecian pillars extend from the second to the third floors. The windows will come out in a curving manner and will be made of copper. The building when completed will be occupied by Truck No. 1. and Engine No. 2. The present Dundee company will take their headquarters in the new building. In the truck house the large aerial auto which is now in the Rescue Hook and Ladder house in the Municipal Building will be taken to the new building, because of the need of larger apparatus in that vicinity. Chief Bowker has found that three-qaurters of the tires in Passaic take place in the vicinity of the new fire house. In case of a large lire breaking out, the aerial truck will be there within a few seconds. The auto truck, which is now located at the Alert Truck House. Passaic Bridge, will be placed in the Municipal Building, and a horse and truck placed in the Alert house until an auto is purchased. In the engine house Assistant Chief Gibson will have his carriage and the fire auto, which is now at the Dundee Company 2 house will be placed in the new building. Each fire house will be provided with four sliding poles which will be covered with the latest patent automotic sliding pole covers. These covers are attached to the fire bell system and just as the gong rings, the automatic attachment gives way for the men to slide down the pole. The entire building will be fireproof. Every piece of wire will be placed in an iron conduit, making it fireproof This is a new scheme which is being tried successfully in all the larger cities. The fire alarm wires will also be placed in an iron conduit. The second floor will be used as the dormitory. The room will accommodate beds for 24 firemen. This is considered a very large number. In the front of the second floor there will be two captain’s rooms to be occupied by William Nelson, captain of No. 2. and by Thos. Hutchinson, captain of Truck No. 1. Assistant Chief Gibson will have one large room for his own use. In the rear of the floor there will be several shower baths, which will come in handy after fires.
The third floor, will, in all probability, become a recreation room, but just what will occupy this floor has not been decided upon. According to the plans at present, there will be one large reading room, where all the latest books regarding fires and lectures will be placed, so that the men may spend their leisure moments in reading. Tn the rear of the floor will be a gymnastic department having all the latest equipments. The other plan for this floor is to have it filled with fire apparatus which may he put in use at any time. The room can be used in placing fire connections with the other houses. The definite plan will be decided upon after the building is completed, as the contractors have been given instructions not to place any partitions on the third floor.
