Nepotism Ruling Bars Pay
Volunteer firemen in Oklahoma are prohibited from receiving compensation for their services if they are related by blood or marriage to any municipal official who participates in the appointment of fire fighters, according to a recent interpretation of the state nepotism statute by the state attorney general. Andy L. Miller, executive director of the Oklahoma State Firemen’s Association, said that under this ruling, volunteers who are city officials or related to city officials could continue to be fire fighters as long as they did not accept any compensation.
