More Than Half of Firefighters’ Grant Program Applications Processed

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) has announced that more than 9,700 of the nearly 20,000 applications received from fire departments seeking grants under the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program have been entered into the database. Processing is being expedited, FEMA/USFA explains, so that award recipients may be notified by the September 30, 2001, deadline.

Confirmation of receipt for individual applications and demographic analysis of the applicants by state, type of fire department, or other characteristics will not be available for several weeks.

Evaluation panels will begin meeting at FEMA's National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Maryland, on May 20 to review the top-ranked applications and make recommendations to FEMA/USFA. An evaluation of the grant application peer review process the panels will use was completed this week.
