The houses which fell were intended to be used as flats. Had they been occupied and then taken fire, what was there to hinder either the tenants or the firemen—supposing the flames had gained any headway—from meeting with a terrible death, in what would have probably been a heap of ruins within a very few minutes ? In the case of fires in such structures the walls and floors would collapse without giving the slightest warning, and a fearful holocaust would be the result. Surely, our firemen take risks enough as it is without being exposed to such as are preventable —are intended to be prevented—by an honest system of inspection on the part of the building department. The disaster of last week calls for a strict investigation as well as for the severest punishment the law lays down in the event of the conviction of the offenders. If criminal negligence and dishonesty are proved against any parties concerned, then we are sure that Chief Bonner, who was himself on the ground after the “accident” and personally inspected the ruins and what was still left standing of the buildings, will do all that in him lies to see that justice is impartially meted out to those who may be proved to be guilty in the matter. Of all who are concerned in the proper carrying out of the laws of the building department he is the one most interested in taking care that the dollar-grabbing contractors and the venal officials too commonly met with nowadays shall not be permitted to run up such deathtraps with impunity.
