More About Seattle’s Death Trap.
(From our regular correspondent.)
On the night of October 27 Seattle firemen celebrated the anniversary of the paid department by tendering asocial dance at their headquarters. At 1 o’clock A. M. on the 28th. box 17 was turned in for a fire in the West Street House, a corrugated iron budding at Bohemia and West streets. Owing to rotten hose on the fire boat a delay was occasioned in getting streams of water from that source; but the land force of the fire department were at work with commendable promptitude. About fifty persons occupied rooms in the building on the night of the fire and sixteen charred bodies rest on the slabs in the morgue while a number of injured are at the hospitals. The explosion of a lamp in the kitchen started the fire. The build* ir.g burned like tinder, and was a mass of flames in a few minutes.
